Job Status of LawyersAccording to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, there were 761,000 lawyers in 2006. A little less than a third of those lawyers were self-employed. The career is projected to grow at an average rate and remain highly competitive. In the next decade, the profession is expected to grow by 11%. This number is based on population and business growth that will result in a greater amount of legal work. In addition, the legal profession is becoming more involved in industries such as health care, venture capital, energy, intellectual property, and antitrust. The middle class is expected to have greater access to legal services with the spread of legal clinics. However, the profession will be constrained because accounting firms and paralegals are now engaged in performing some of the tasks that lawyers traditionally did. Growth is expected to be greatest for salaried jobs that are typically in urban areas where government agencies, corporations, and law firms are located. Since big law firms are becoming the norm, there is not expected to be a large increase in self-employed attorneys. Law is becoming more complex, forcing specialization and vast amounts of research materials. This is costly and larger firms are much more equipped than small firms to deal with these demands.
